ABOUT THE GROUP

The Meopham Marquetry Group meet twice a month to encourage interest in the art and craft of marquetry.
At these meetings, senior members of the group give supervision to those who like to bring their work along.
Demonstrations are given on specific aspects of marquetry by our experts or, on occasions an invited guest speaker.
Exchanging ideas and solving problems is also a feature.

WHERE DO WE MEET?

In the rooms at Mount Zion Baptist Chapel, Wrotham Road, Meopham. (see map below) First and third Friday of each month, 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

WHAT DOES IT COST?

There is an annual subscription of £14. 00 but there is no attendance fee at the meetings.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO MEMBERS?

  • Being an independent group we can be flexible with our instruction and are able to take on newcomers at any time and teach them exactly what is required to get them under way.
  • We have a wealth of experience in the group and expert tuition is assured.
  • The atmosphere of our meetings is relaxed and friendly with time for a tea or coffee break which we manage to provide free of charge.
  • The tools and materials required for marquetry can be readily purchased from our 'shop' at low prices.
  • We stock a wide range of veneers including highly figured and exotic types.

HOW IS THE GROUP ORGANISED?

We are organised by an elected committee, that meets regularly and is committed to ensuring that all member's interests are being catered for.
We have several regular features to our annual programme that includes:

  • An exhibition, usually held in the autumn at Meopham Library.
  • An inter-group competition with Bexley Group which doubles as a social event.
  • A Christmas Social at which our members bring along their partner for an evening of eats, drinks, a raffle and the judging of our 'Christmas Marquetry Competition'.

WHAT IS MARQUETRY?

To use the Marquetry Society's definition.

"Marquetry is the craft and art of making pictures, decorative designs and patterns by skilful use of the grain, figure and natural colour of veneers of wood"

It's simpler to do than you might think and we can show you how. It is not necessary to be artistic, you only need reasonable eyesight and a steady hand.
