Our August update features another new (to us that is) example of Buchschmid and Gretaux wood inlay religious work which, we are pleased to say, we have never seen before. |
Our August update brings you a very fine example of a Buchschmid and Gretaux wood inlay picture which is not one of the regular themes that feature on these web pages.
We believe this picture could be one of the rare "The Lord" titles. It is a 14 x 18 inches picture (approx 36 x 46 cms) - a size which doesn't seen to appear in the Buchschmid and Gretaux catalogue sheets. We know that Buchschmid and Gretaux did take on bespoke and commissioned work, so possibly this title may fall into that category. However, if anyone else has a copy of this work, we would be pleased to hear about it. Sadly the records and books of the Buchschmid and Gretaux wood inlay Company were lost or destroyed with the passing away of Herr Otto Chlup a few years ago. Otto told us there was an office and storage facility holding all the records and display pieces of the Buchschmid and Gretaux company which he was going to sort out and organise so that he could furnish us with a full inventory and records of all matters B & G and ABC Studios. But alas that was the last we heard from Otto. We chased things up as best we could with the Heidelberg authorities, but sad to say, no-one knew what became of the B & G plus ABC Studios inventories. So, with the passing of Otto a few years ago, the official history of Buchschmid and Gretaux went with him. In the time that Otto spent with us as an advisor on all matters regarding Buchshcmid and Gretaux Wood Inlay Works and the ABC Studios of Heidelberg, we learnt quite a lot about the history and running of those two repected estabishments. Otto was very generous with his help and knowledge and became a very good friend to us, but with his loss our fount of wisdom regarding B & G and its wood inlay work ceased to exist. We will keep trying to trace the where abouts of that B & G inventory if it still exists; but it would not surprise us if it all went to landfill. Still, we will nonetheless keep our collective fingers crossed and hope for the best. Never give up hope. We are always pleased to hear about anyone's Buchschmid and Gretaux wood inlay pieces. Every piece that is brought to our attention adds to the knowledge base of the Buchschmid and Gretaux Wood Inlay Company and helps to develop a comprehensive history of this talented company. |
